How online Texas Holdem players revealed a cheater - instruction
More about Texas Holdem on RoomReview.net - Best Texas Holdem Guide.
In early 18th century, in the wild west, in case if Texas Holdem player was caught cheating, or at least trying to cheat, it was considered a capital offence and the cheater was sentenced to death, getting his punishment right across the table from one of his opponents. Times change, so today if you're caught cheating online (which is almost impossible), you may, in some rare cases, get away scot-free. In most cases you'll only need to register a new account and try to cheat again.
Although cheating is a pretty rare occasion, it recently happened in probably the biggest scandal in the history of online gaming in general and Texas Holdem poker in particular. Few cheating players actually managed to cheat online poker players for over 20 million US dollars. This accident raises a lot of new questions about actual security and integrity of online poker rooms based outside U.S. This speculation could have gone unrevealed in case if the players themselves wouldn't start an investigation.
You may already know that all you need to start playing Texas Holdem poker online, is use our site to find an online poker room matching your personal preferences, open an account and fund it with your credit card (or through other payment systems or methods). Therefore these cheaters are very hard to find. They could be playing from any place in the world. Besides of this, although online gambling is illegal in the United States, millions of US residents continue playing in online poker rooms located offshore, where the US legislation has no power to control and regulate them.
Patrik Antonius vs. Tom “durrrr” Dwan at four heads-up No-Limit Texas Holdem tables
It was suspected that something wrong is happening on Absolute Poker. Witteles's suspicions were first aroused during a high stake No-Limit Texas Holdem game, where he was playing against a lame, but very lucky newbie. His nickname was Grey Cat. This player seemed to be a noob, a living example of what they call fish. His playing style and decisions where quite terrible, but he won one game after another and that's what aroused suspicions in Witteles's mind. Witteles asked his friends to try to play against Grey Cat and everybody was getting the same result. Lame player won. Another world famous Texas Holdem professional, David Paredes, a former Harvard student, who earned his expensive New York apartment and paid off his law school loan earning money from online Texas Holdem, was defeated by another player that was playing in the same way.
Paredes and his friends tried to analyze these players' games and realized that they had to know what other players had, in order to win that much, considering their overall playing style. That makes sense, because if you could see your opponents' cards, then you could be the worst Texas Holdem player ever seen and still be winning against the best poker players in the world.
During the month, thousands of player blogs, poker forums and poker room chats were stuffed with plenty of evidences and reports about these suspicious players. Thousands of players complained to both Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker, but they failed to give a clear answer to the players' questions and solve any of the issues. After this, the online Texas Holdem community undertook the investigation itself. It was clear that somebody has either hacked their server, or it was somebody from inside the company.
Several months later, the community finally got lucky after one of Texas Holdem players requested the hand histories of another suspicious player. Absolute Poker support sent an .xls spreadsheet containing tremendous quantity of data, which included the cheater's IP address. It became understandable that this player was cheating and that it was one of former Absolute Poker employees. Right after all these facts were provided to the Absolute Poker staff, the company had to acknowledge that all these tremendous losses were possible as a result of illegal activities of their former employee, who could see his opponents' cards in all games. But the most surprising thing, which made all the victims of this incident, as well as millions of other Texas Holdem players angry is that Absolute Poker promised their former employee to keep his identity in secret in exchange for a complete explanation of how he managed to cheat their servers.
